Alana was born and raised on the Hawaiian island of Maui, where her dad taught her and her brother to surf at around the same age as when they learned to walk. Growing up by the ocean, she has cultivated an appreciation for, as well as recognition of, how the ocean has blessed, healed, and shaped her life. The opportunity to teach others about surfing and its dynamic gifts was a natural attraction for Alana. After spending her childhood competing in surfing at an amateur level, she left Hawaii to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and a career as a Clinical Dietitian. Soon after moving to California, she became the captain of her collegiate surf team, competing up and down the California coast. In between classes, Alana taught surf lessons and summer camps at the Van Curaza Surf School, where she inevitably gravitated towards Operation Surf. She has been involved in the organization since 2014, and participates in local as well as international events. She looks forward to seeing Operation Surf grow and expand its community globally, and introduce the healing power of surfing and the ocean to all those in need.
